Terron and Norm receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal

After a very successful launch of another HERO's Hockey program in Ottawa last month, the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, paid a visit to the local Vancouver program yesterday... where HERO's first began. Terron (and Norm) were in Ottawa during the NHL All Star Game as invited guests of the Governor General - where the HERO's kids got to skate on an outdoor rink right outside of Rideau Hall.

Following that event, the Governor General expressed an interest to come and visit the program, in action in Vancouver. On short notice, that event took place yesterday afternoon and Terron and Norm were surprised to be presented by his Excellency. The Diamond Jubilee Award ... marking their commitment to community by organizing and growing this amazing program.

H.E.R.O.S. launch in Ottawa

On Saturday, January 28, the NHL, Ottawa Senators and Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (H.E.R.O.S) teamed up for a special announcement at Rideau Hall in Ottawa during the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend - hosted by the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston.

The event marked the official launch of the first ever NHL Hockey is for Everyone™ program center in Ottawa that will be operated by H.E.R.O.S in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. The program will have a strategic mission to introduce the game of hockey to ethnically and economically diverse children and leverage hockey as a catalyst to provide support for education, self-esteem building and life-skills training sessions.

Following the indoor ceremony “Future H.E.R.O.S. Youth” joined NHL pioneer Willie O’Ree, Governor General David Johnston, CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos, NHL alumni and NHL players for a special skate on the Rideau Hall ice rink—a staple of the Governor General’s residence since 1872.

Congratulations to Norm Flynn and H.E.R.O.S - and best of luck to them as they build out their new program in Ottawa!
