Participants

Participant Selection Criteria

Each school board task force selects male/female participants (ages 7–13) based on:

• At-risk behaviour
• Economic need
• Athletic ability
• Academic performance
• Self-esteem issues
• Potential to benefit from the program



Participant Activities

• A two-hour session, held once per week over a 25-week period during the autumn/winter. This gives
   children on/off-ice instruction using educational games to enhance learning and improve
   academic performance. Sessions take place in a fun, safe environment where every child is
   considered a HERO.

• Professional guest speakers provide monthly educational and motivational talks. (Topics include goal
   setting, anger management, effects of crime and violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and benefits
   of education.)

• Structured ice hockey skills lessons.

• Time spent one on one with H.E.R.O.S. mentors.

• In-school tutoring with specialized course instruction.

Demonstrate the four essential H.E.R.O.S. behaviours:

4. Fun
