Empowering children on ice

Winnipeg

Programs: North End · St. John's

HEROS launched its 8th national program in the North End of Winnipeg in September 2009.

The majority of the children in the North End program are from a First Nations background. They, along with all of the HEROS girls and boys face the challenge of living in neighbourhoods where dilapidated houses line the streets and drugs, gangs & prostitution are prevalent. Violence is also something that the children are exposed to and in some cases this has led to them being moved from foster home to foster home or extended care.

HEROS has provided these kids with a safe environment. Winnipeg has embraced the program and many members of the community offer funding, volunteer time and support for the children. This support has led to the start of a second HEROS program in Winnipeg at St. John’s High School.

Testimonials

We are so proud to be involved with such a worthwhile program. HEROS started with a dream and made it a reality helping children understand the great game of hockey while instilling life skills training. The NHLPA Goals & Dreams Fund has provided over 400 sets of equipment with a value of over $200,000 for this worthy cause. We will continue to support and help HEROS continue to growth throughout Canada
